Music Therapy for Stroke

Do you like to listening to the music? Now, we can take the advantage of such activity to help us in the health problem. Listening to your favorite music can help the recovery of the patient having the vision problem caused by the stroke. It is stated on the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The vision disturbance of the patient having a stroke generally is caused by the damage in a certain part of human's brain functioned as the vision coordination, focus ability, and action.

The experiment has been conducted related to this kind of therapy. David Soto, PhD from the Imperial College London and his team have conducted an experiment by asking some patients having stroke disease to take a vision test in three different conditions. The first is that they take the test while listening to the music that they like, the second is that they take the test while listening to the music that they don't like, and the last is that they take the test without listening to any music. The result show that 60% of those patients have the better score in vision test while they are listening to the music that they like.

From the brain scanning using MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), the researchers conclude that the music can increase the neurotransmitter or the brain chemical, that has the function to control the positive emotion and mood. "There is a positive connection between the neurotransmitter and the brain awareness. When the emotional area is active, the area in the brain that controls the awareness works more effectively", said David Soto. Such process helps to maximize the work of the brain in producing the stimulus to help to see better.

After reading such kind of report, we now realize that music has a very significant effect for our brain in creating a good emotional outcome. For the patients having stroke, such therapy will be a great help to the process of the recovery, especially for the visionary problem.
